Pangea Acquires Flaire's $6m+ IP Portfolio as it Accelerates AI-Native Travel Discovery & Planning

Pangea Acquires Flaire's $6m+ IP Portfolio to Accelerate AI-Native Travel Discovery & Planning

NEW YORK, NY – April 22, 2026 —Pangea, the travel technology ecosystem building the “Strava for Travel,” today announced the acquisition of Flaire, an AI-native discovery engine for recommendations with strong traction among Gen Z travelers and tastemakers. The acquisition integrates Pangea’s social travel operating system with Flaire’s social recommendation technology to enhance how travelers and tastemakers share and explore the world.

The deal continues Pangea’s consolidation strategy, following the acquisitions of Overlap and Nomadago, as the company aggregates travel communities into a unified, AI-powered platform.

Central to the acquisition is Flaire’s proprietary AI technology and IP portfolio, the product of over $6 million in R&D investment, including one granted patent, two patents pending, and a suite of AI-native tools. Flaire’s core innovation, the Places Genome, provides a structured framework for mapping the experiential qualities of destinations across continuous dimensions rather than static categories or ratings. Similar to how music platforms map music by energy and mood, the Place Genome translates places into a shared attribute space based on traveler sentiment, enabling more precise recommendations, grounded in real travel behavior.

Pangea will integrate these capabilities into a shared AI recommendation layer to power an experience that moves from inspiration through planning and into agentic booking. This integration is supported by Pangea’s platform and team, developed to rapidly unify complementary travel products through a combination of M&A expertise and proprietary infrastructure.

“People still share travel recommendations through scattered texts and messy shared docs,” explained Matt Gray, Founder & CEO of Pangea, who has personally traveled to 118 countries. “The result is a fragmented experience where time is wasted repeating the same surface-level research, while great recommendations slip through the cracks. Flaire gives us the infrastructure to fix that: an intelligent social layer that makes it easy for travelers to share experiences and discover recommendations that are actually relevant, from real people with similar interests, taste, and curiosity.”

Julia Carter, Founder & CEO of Flaire, is an ex-Google and startup veteran with more than a decade of experience building AI-native products. She recognized the delicate balance of blending the latest technology with recommendations from real people. “AI has introduced speed and efficiency, but it hasn’t solved for trust. Flaire marries the convenience of AI with the trust of social proof to deliver actionable recommendations.”

Carter was drawn to Pangea for its novel consolidation approach. “After years of building in this space and seeing firsthand the struggle to lay a strong technical foundation and simultaneously scale to millions of active travelers, I’m convinced that the winning platform will be built by founders who join forces. Pangea, with its comprehensive vision and formidable team of former ION executives, is uniquely positioned to become the market leader, and I’m beyond thrilled for Flaire’s technology to play a key role in Pangea’s success.”

Carter will join Pangea as a Board Advisor, alongside Alex Triplett, Mark Tirschwell, Ashley Woods, and Everett Brownstein, all former colleagues of Gray’s. The team previously held leadership positions at ION Group, where they executed a multi-billion dollar consolidation playbook in financial technology that now informs Pangea’s approach to travel.

“AI will fundamentally reshape how people discover and experience the world,” said Mark Tirschwell, former ION Group Chief Information Officer and Pangea Board Member. “Flaire’s AI portfolio strengthens our position to lead that transformation, providing a critical layer of infrastructure that will help Pangea scale as we continue to consolidate the market.”

Pangea will maintain Flaire as a standalone platform, accelerating its roadmap with new features to enhance recommendation sharing and discovery before eventually combining it into their core platform. They are focused on preserving and amplifying the community’s existing content, ensuring every user recommendation remains a permanent, high-value part of the integrated Pangea experience.

The travel sector has long been a graveyard of standalone apps that failed to overcome fragmented user behavior, siloed data, and high customer acquisition costs. Pangea is addressing this structural friction by aggregating these disparate communities into a single, high-utility platform. By combining Flaire’s AI infrastructure with a proven consolidation playbook, Pangea is building a solution designed to overcome these legacy constraints and emerge as an enduring category leader.
